Your Holiday Disposal Guide

Your Holiday Disposal Guide

A 2021 analysis by the Center for Biological Diversity shows that Americans generate 23% more tons of waste in December than in other months of the year. The U.S. alone generates 5.8 million tons more waste in December than in other months of the year—that’s equivalent to the weight of 28,713 Boeing 747 airplanes.(1)

In a season full of joy, relaxation and family-time, it is also full of waste. From the gifts purchased, to the packaging, and even to the food waste. Here are the scary stats for the holiday season:

  • 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper are produced in the US and half of it ends up in landfills (2)

  • More than $8.3 billion is estimated to be wasted on unwanted gifts each year according to a 2022 report by Finder (3)

  • An estimated 30% of gifts are returned each year. 80% of these returned items end up in landfills, contributing to 5.8 billion pounds of waste and 16 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping process each year (4)

  • Holiday food waste is a major contributor to higher waste numbers in the last two months of the year. Food waste specifically is estimated to increase 25% between Thanksgiving and New Years.

There are many ways we can combat waste this holiday season and we’ve put together a quick and easy guide for you to access.

RECYCLE

  • Plain wrapping paper (no foils or glitter)

  • Cardboard boxes (flattened)

  • Plain gift boxes and bags (again, no foils or glitter on these)

  • Plain cards and envelopes (no foils or glitter!)

In Minneapolis, you can recycle plastic packaging #1, 2, and 5. Other plastics (#3, 4, 6, 7 AND black plastic) is not accepted. Make sure to check your local recycling guidelines for what is accepted in your curbside bin!

GARBAGE

(Bolded items with * are easy to DONATE and REUSE)

  • Fancy wrapping paper* (anything with foils, glitter, holographic, etc.) — flatten these and save to use them again!

  • Bows and ribbons* — these can easily be reused for future gifting.

  • Fancy gift boxes and bags* (glitter, foils, etc.) — same here, use for future gifting!

  • Fancy greeting cards* — save these to repurpose for future gift tags, or postcards.

  • Tissue Paper and Cellophane* — flatten these and use them again in the future

  • Paper and plastic plates, cups and other eating utensils

  • Plastic packaging — make sure to check the plastic # and your local recycling guidelines! Minneapolis accepts #1, 2, 5 but does not accept #3, 4, 6, 7 and black plastic. Plastics that are not accepted should be trashed or you can find alternative collection/drop-off options.

  • Toys*

  • Decorations* (garlands, wreaths, artificial trees, etc.)

SPECIAL

COMPOST

  • Food waste

  • Cardboard and plain papers

  • Natural fibers like cotton, twine, etc.

SPECIAL COLLECTION OR DROP-OFF

  • Real trees — check with your city for special collection, or look for drop-off locations after the New Years

  • Lights — these CANNOT go in your garbage bin as it can tangle and damage machinery. Make sure to look up special drop-offs for holiday lighting.

  • Batteries — also cannot go in your garbage. Collect these safely and drop off at collection points.

  • Plastic Bags — cannot be recycled. We recommend collecting these and dropping off at recycling points commonly at grocery stores.

  • Electronics — do not toss these in your curbside bins! Electronics need special recycling to ensure it’s fully recovered. Look for local electronics recycling facilities to drop off at.

We highly recommend checking your local recycling guidelines for your area in case they have any special collections or drop-off sites for holiday waste. Each city is different!
